Whoopiti

Expected out in August 2025

The attic creaked under the weight of silence, its wooden beams shifting like old bones settling in for another endless night. Elliot leaned forward in his wheelchair, the cool frame of the dormer window pressing against his forehead. His breath fogged the glass, momentarily obscuring his view of the park below. In the fading light, he could just make out the faint outlines of children playing, their laughter carried to him in broken fragments on the evening breeze. The sight filled him with both longing and bitterness—life moving on without him, oblivious to his absence.

The whoopiti sat silently in the shadows near the bed, its rough, mismatched limbs illuminated by the flickering streetlights. Elliot had put so much hope into the creature. He had stitched it with desperation and dreams, believing for just a moment that it might be his salvation. Yet there it sat—lifeless, unmoving. Another symbol of how his life had withered into isolation.

His fingers traced the window frame as he watched a boy and girl below chase a brightly colored kite. The wind tugged at the string, making the kite dance in the golden light of dusk. Elliot’s mind drifted to an old story his teacher had told about Benjamin Franklin, a kite, and lightning—how a simple experiment had sparked a discovery that changed the world. Could something like that still happen? Could lightning bring this creature to life? The very idea was absurd, but wasn’t his entire existence now built on the fragile edge of hope and absurdity?

He whispered aloud, his voice hoarse and trembling. "Maybe… maybe there’s still a chance."

He turned his gaze to the whoopiti, its button eyes glinting faintly in the half-light. For a moment, he could almost imagine it shifting, as if it were waiting for him to take the next step. He shook his head, trying to banish the foolish thought, but it lingered, stubborn and persistent.

"I’ll need a kite," he murmured, the words surprising even himself. His mind raced, piecing together a plan from scraps of memory and instinct. The attic was full of forgotten things—surely there were materials he could use. He had to try. What else did he have but the faint hope that something miraculous might still happen?

With renewed purpose, Elliot pushed himself away from the window and began searching the attic. The shadows seemed to lean closer as if watching, waiting for what would come next.

The Light Between Them

The Light Between Them is a novel that blends science fiction, adventure, and myth, exploring the intersection of scientific discovery and timeless legend. At its heart, it is a story about love, survival, and the bonds that transcend time.

The novel begins in the Arctic, where a team of researchers uncovers a perfectly preserved specimen of the Great Northern Snow Woobie—a creature long thought to be myth. Driven by both scientific curiosity and personal ambition, Dr. Edward Langley and his team embark on a secret experiment to bring the species back to life through cloning. Their work is groundbreaking, but it raises profound ethical questions: Should they bring back a creature that nature has allowed to disappear? And what unforeseen consequences might follow?

As the experiment unfolds, the story takes on a deeply philosophical and emotional dimension. The Snow Woobie—named Sammy—is not merely an animal but something more, something ancient, tied to the very fabric of the northern wilderness. The indigenous elder, Aklaq, warns that the Woobies are more than biological entities; they are spirits of the snow and wind, deeply connected to the world around them. But science does not always heed legend, and soon, Langley and his team realize they have awakened something far greater than they imagined.

When Sammy is taken in by the Postlethwaite family, particularly the children Ava and Katelyn, the novel shifts into an exploration of family, belonging, and the magic of deep connections. Sammy is unlike any other creature—his glowing fur, his ability to sense the world in ways no modern animal can, and his almost human-like understanding of emotion. Through his journey, the book touches on the tension between human progress and the natural world, the fragility of wonder in a world driven by logic, and the beauty of bonds that defy explanation.

The novel’s style is evocative and immersive, painting a vivid picture of the Arctic’s silent majesty and the delicate interplay of science and myth. It blends scientific intrigue with a lyrical, almost folkloric narrative, making it appealing to readers who enjoy both intellectual depth and emotional resonance.

At its core, The Light Between Them is a story about what is lost and what is found—whether it be a species, a sense of wonder, or the intangible threads that connect us to something greater than ourselves. It asks the reader to consider: In a world that constantly pushes forward, what pieces of magic are we leaving behind?

My Biography,

I was born on March 8, 1966, in the heart of Detroit City, where I came of age in the grit and grind of the inner city. Opportunities were scarce, and life’s challenges came early. I struggled through high school and spent eight years working in a factory, followed by three more in construction—years of hard, honest labor that shaped my character and taught me the value of persistence and grit.

Determined to change the course of my life, I returned to education as an adult and graduated summa cum laude from university. That success opened the door to medical school, where I earned my medical degree in 2002. My medical career took root in England and spanned 18 years before I moved to New Zealand, where I’ve spent the past four years working as a family doctor in rural practice.

Medicine has been a deeply rewarding journey, but another passion has always lived quietly alongside it—storytelling. Growing up in hardship gave me a profound appreciation for hope, imagination, and the quiet strength of human connection. In a world often filled with uncertainty and division, I believe stories can bring people together, offer comfort, and spark inspiration. They remind us of who we are, what we've endured, and what still lies ahead.

Now, as I transition from medicine to full-time writing, I’m dedicating myself to creating stories that celebrate resilience, kindness, and the bonds that hold us together. Whether through adventure, mystery, or the quiet moments of everyday life, my goal is to write heartfelt tales that families can enjoy and cherish—stories that uplift, that linger, and that remind us there's beauty even in life’s most difficult chapters.
